Charges of a racist comment, “ugly wetback,” hurled toward a 5 year old boy by the then accused Councilwoman Michelle Chambers in has resurfaced along with charges of a double standard in the 35th Senate District Primary election race.
The nationally recognized Inglewood, CA blog, “2 Urban Girls” a credible and reliable brand that has been mentioned in reputable publishing sites across the country broke that story in July 2021. They wrote then Compton Councilwoman Michelle Chambers had called a 5 year old Latino boy an “Ugly Wetback.”
The name calling happened in a closed session of the Council meeting. After her comments were revealed in open session Chambers denied making the comments and urged others in the meeting to deny the allegation also. But, no other denial from any of particiapants present in the closed session spoke up, other than to cite possible Brown Act Violations. However, Brown Act would not have covered such a comment from being discussed publicly.
Since the “2 Urban Girls” story came to light it seems the matter was quckly swept under the rug without further, mention nor investigation. Especially since, months later, Chambers would suddenly resign from her council seat giving only a 2 day notice, and a broad explanation she was accepting new employment.
35th District Voters Express Concerns of A Double Standard
in July 2022 a similar child name calling incident became breaking news nationwide when the Los Angeles City Council President, other council members, and a union official were accused of the same type of name calling toward an African American child. In that incident heads rolled quickly with the President of the LA City Council and a Union Leader resigning after unrelenting calls for their resignation were voiced by many ethnic groups including Latinos.
So the question has now surfaced how did Michelle Chambers escape the same scrutiny for the same action that took place in Compton against a 5 year old child just months before the LA City Council incident?
I Don’t Know What That Means ( “Ugly Wetback” )
Michelle Chambers currenly a candidate in the March 5th Primary for the 35th Senate District has effectively dodged explaining the child name calling event. When approached before the start of a candidate debate last month at Carson Park in Carson a district resident approached Candidate Chambers seeking a private explanation of the “Ugly Wetback” comment. The incident was videoed and since uploaded to the internet and can be viewed here.
During the conversation Chambers was asked about the incident. She claimed the incident was not true and it was investigated and debunked. She then says she is not from here and, “I don’t know what that means.” The video can be seen here.
Harbor Hub Bulletin has researched for a few of weeks now and so far has not been able to find any proof that the Compton event was ever investigated nor debunked. After the report from The 2 Urban Girls the matter seems to have been swept under the rug.
A Carson resident overhearing the conversation at Carson Park who declined to be indentified said “If you have been living in L.A. 32 years and claim to not even know yet what wetback means then you shouldn’t be representing Latinos here or you’re a liar. Either way it disqualifies such a candidate.”
